Factors Affecting Towel Softness During the Washing Process

Whether the towels washed by the laundry plants are fluffy and soft is an important indicator of washing quality. So, how to wash a comfortable and soft towel? What factors during the washing process can affect the comfort of the towel?

Precautions During the Washing Process

Softening treatment is necessary. Softeners can make linen soft and anti-static and help restore the touch of the towels. During operation, when the water is at 40℃ to 50℃, the proper amount of softeners can be added. Then, the low water level of washing can be adopted for about 3 to 4 minutes. After that, the towels can be taken out and air-dried. The towels after this treatment are soft and even more fluffy than before washing. The dosage of softeners should be added according to the detergent manufacturer. Insufficient dosage cannot reach the good softening effect, and excessive dosage will leave residues of detergents. The long-term accumulation will make the towels turn yellow and have odors.

Tips to Keep Linen Soft and Skin-Friendly After Washing

● The choice of detergents should be right. People should control the timing and temperature of addition and be familiar with their characteristics and methods. If detergent with chlorine is used, the residual chlorine should be removed by sufficient rinses and neutralizers.

● If the content of ions such as calcium, magnesium, and iron in washing water is too high, they will accumulate and form deposits over time. People should optimize the water quality and use soft water. (Hardness should be less than 50ppm.)

● When using a softener, the pH (5.5 to 6.5), water temperature (40℃–50℃), and reaction time (no more than 5 minutes) should be controlled.

● The linen should not be overused. Hotels should maintain a linen ratio of at least 1:3. That is, one set for use, one for washing, and one for rest. This helps prolong linen service life.

● People should regularly check the laundry equipment to avoid damage to machines or secondary contamination. The rotating drum should be checked to see whether it is smooth to avoid fabric fraying or damage caused by burrs.

● Thin and thick fabrics should be dried separately. After the clothes are dried to about 80%, the cold air should be turned on to dry clothes naturally.

● New and old linen should be treated separately. Natural aging and abnormal damage should be treated differently, and the dehydration time should be adjusted according to the difference in strength.

● People should clean and disinfect the linen storage area every day, including the floor, walls, and equipment surfaces. In particular, frequently touched areas such as laundry equipment and operation tables should be disinfected in a timely manner.

● The linen room should be clean and dry, and the storage should be sorted reasonably to prevent dampness and mold.

● Detergents are chemical products, so the operators should master the basic knowledge to avoid misuse, mixing, or wrong addition.

● When using industrial washing machines, the dehydration time should be well controlled. Long dehydration time may cause damage to linen due to large mechanical forces. Short dehydration time may cause damage to linen due to the residual detergents.

● The sorting process should be stricter before washing to avoid the physical damage caused by the mixing of sharp and rigid items.

● The loading volume should be controlled reasonably according to its rated capacity. Overloading or underloading will both affect the washing quality.

Above are some factors that may affect the softness of the towels during the washing process.
